Cleaning best practice

Sand, grit and the entrance mat

The short answer

Most floor wear is abrasion from tracked-in sand, and a long entrance matting run removes more of it than any cleaning schedule.

Fine desert sand behaves like sandpaper underfoot. Every step across an unmatted entrance grinds a little of it into the finish.

How it is done

  • Allow several steps of matting inside the entrance, not a single small mat.
  • Vacuum the mats themselves; a loaded mat stops working.
  • Vacuum hard floors before mopping so grit is lifted, not dragged.
  • Keep balcony doors matted too, which is the route people forget.

Why it matters

Dulled marble and scratched wood in Gulf homes are usually abrasion, not cleaning damage. Stopping the grit at the door is the cheapest floor protection available.

Asked about this

Long enough for several footfalls. In a villa entrance that means a runner rather than a doormat.

Yes. Tiles resist scratching better than marble or wood, but grout and softer glazes still suffer.
