Cleaning best practice

What a handover clean is actually judged on

The short answer

Move-out and handover cleans are inspected at the edges — inside cupboards, behind appliances, window tracks, AC grilles — not in the middle of the room.

Nobody inspecting a property runs a finger along the centre of a floor. They open the cupboard under the sink and look at the top of the door frame.

How it is done

  • Empty and clean the inside of every cupboard and drawer.
  • Move the appliances and clean behind and beneath them.
  • Tracks, hinges, handles, switch plates and skirting.
  • AC grilles and filters, balcony drains and the meter cupboard.

Why it matters

Deposits are withheld over a small number of predictable items. A handover clean is really a checklist exercise against an inspector's habits.

questions

Asked about this

Yes, a completed list and photographs, which is normally what a landlord or agent wants to see.

Overlapping but not identical. A handover clean prioritises what will be inspected; a deep clean prioritises what affects how the home lives.
