Cleaning best practice

Mattresses and dust mites

The short answer

Dust mite allergen is reduced by HEPA extraction, hot laundering of bedding and lower bedroom humidity; chemical sprays do little on their own.

Mites feed on shed skin and thrive in warm, humid bedding. A mattress is the largest reservoir in most homes and the least often addressed.

How it is done

  • Slow, overlapping HEPA vacuum passes across both faces and the sides.
  • Launder bedding hot and dry it fully.
  • Keep bedroom humidity down; mites struggle in drier air.
  • Consider a tightly woven encasement for a diagnosed allergy.

Why it matters

For a child waking congested every morning, the mattress and the bedroom air are the two places worth addressing first, and both respond to method rather than to product.
