Practice note

When indoor testing is worth doing, and when it is not

The short answer

Test when the cause is unclear, disputed, or when a decision depends on the answer; skip it when the problem is visible and the fix is obvious.

Testing is a diagnostic, not a ritual. If mould is growing under a leaking sink, a laboratory report tells you nothing you cannot see.

How it is done

  • Worth it: recurring symptoms with no visible cause
  • Worth it: before buying or renting a property
  • Worth it: to confirm remediation actually worked
  • Not worth it: where the cause is visible and the repair obvious

Why it matters

A company that tests everything and always finds something is selling reports. We would rather tell you a test would not change the decision.

questions

Asked about this

Where the situation warrants it, yes. Post-remediation verification is the part most often skipped.

As an indicator, sometimes. For anything you intend to act on or dispute, laboratory analysis with a chain of custody is the standard.
